Thinking of Buying Compact Binoculars?

To use any piece of kit on a regular basis, the advantages have to outweigh the disadvantages.  If you’re anything like us, you probably have an impulse buy lurking in the back of the cupboard somewhere.  It seemed a good idea at the time but the hassle of using it means it just don’t see daylight.

Binoculars can be the same, if they’re too cumbersome you just won’t bother to take them with you. And you’re going to miss out in the process.  Weight can be a big issue, not only for back packers and trekkers but also at events. If you’re going to be using binoculars for an extended period of time, they need to be comfortable. The last thing you want is to be in discomfort as you hold up a full-size pair of binoculars to see what’s happening.  That’s where your compact binoculars are worth their weight in gold!

Compact Camera Specifications

In terms of specification, aim for lenses of between 20mm to 36mm.  If you go larger then your binoculars are going to be bigger and heavier. If you’ve no plans to use them lots during dusk or at night then this size of lenses is going to be big enough to give you a bright view during the day.

On the magnification  aim for between 6x and 10x.  There are actually some major advantages in going for a lower magnification. Firstly, the image is going to be more stable. Secondly, you’re going to get a wider field of view, allowing you to see more.

A good pair of compact binoculars which provide you with good functionality and which are easy to use are a god send. Yes, there are times when we want the bells and whistles of the big guys.  But more often than not, a good pair of compact binoculars can get the job done. However, you do still want a quality of vision and whilst you can pick up very basic pairs for under $20 it’s likely that you’re going to get some distortion and they’re going to struggle in low light conditions. Step up to the next price brand and for around $50 you’re going to get a pair which is great for every day’s use.  And most importantly, you’ll actually want to take out with you.
